Not sure where it came from but if I had to guess I would say it came from Civil War times . Dewitt thinks it from pre-civial war when ships displayed colored flags to represent their country of orgin. Some ships would fly false colors to deceive enemy ships and gain entry into the enemies harbors.
We both agreed that to us it means to reveal who you really are. A person can only disguise and pretend to be something that they aren’t for a short time before their real behaviors and personalities come out into the open.
